2008 Weight Loss Challenge Battle of the Bulge

Program Info: Participants were grouped into two teams of seven, and each team had their own trainer. For the program, each team had a grueling weekly workout with their trainer as well as a weekly weigh-in Prior to the competition, each person underwent a metabolic test to determine their resting metabolic rate and then met with our registered dietitian, Diana Wojnowski, to establish a daily caloric goal. They were also shown how to keep a diet log and asked to monitor their food intake during the program. There were also a series of four nutritional seminars throughout the program where the participants learned about various topics such as Portion sizes, carbohydrates and fat, and even included a tour of Wegman’s where they learned about reading food labels and making healthy choices at the grocery store.

Team challenges: Throughout the program the teams accrued points for gym usage, weekly weight loss, attendance for team workouts and seminars, as well as additional personal training or nutritional counseling. There were also scheduled team challenges in which the teams could earn extra points. Some of the more fun competitons were the “What’s weighing you down” food drive where participants cleared their cupboards of less healthy food choices and the calories were tallied. Overall, more than 277,000 calories were counted and over 150 lbs of non-perishable goods were donated to the Walworth Food Pantry. The other favorite team challenge was a cook-off where the teams had to find healthy recipes and prepare a three course meal that was judged by our Registered Dietitian based on ingredients, taste, and presentation. In the end, The Purple team won the team competition, 1030 to 1009. For their efforts they were each awarded with a free ½ hour massage at Village Fitness and scheduled for makeovers with BOCES cosmetology students.

Individual competition: In the end we had a number of people lose significant amounts of weight. Six participants lost between 10-19 lbs, one lost 26, and two others were over 30 pounds lost. Our greatest amount of weight loss was 38 lbs. The total mount lost between the two teams was 213 lbs! The prize was determined based on percentage of weight lost, and our winner was Alicia Hyman, who lost a total of 15.2% of her original body weight!
